Après l’exposition collective Géographie de l’intime, entremêlant la mémoire et la poésie, le B7L9 a le plaisir de présenter States of Exception, la première exposition personnelle institutionnelle en Tunisie de l’artiste peintre tunisien Thameur Mejri, sous le commissariat de Matthieu Lelièvre, du 25 mars au 2 Mai.
Un vernissage est prévu le 25 Mars à 17h, suivi d’une rencontre avec Thameur Mejri et Matthieu Lelièvre à 18h30.
Pour cette exposition monographique, Thameur Mejri a choisi d’explorer la nature même du pouvoir dans le cadre démocratique. En choisissant comme titre States of Exception, que l’on peut traduire par « états d’exception », il emprunte au philosophe Giorgio Agamben, une réflexion plus large sur la nature et l’exercice du pouvoir dans l’espace démocratique et interroge la légitimité des formes de gouvernement.
À travers la peinture comme espace de création, à la fois sur la toile mais aussi sous d’autres formes, à travers le dessin, l’installation et une réflexion autour de l’atelier, Thameur Mejri constitue un espace composite et polymorphe d’expressions et d’actions dans lequel les corps des visiteurs s’en- gagent physiquement et mentalement. Ensemble, ils déconstruisent la nature de la violence et de la résistance au sein et en dehors de la loi. Ses œuvres s’appuient sur la tradition picturale de l’émotion en recourant à la couleur appliquée en de grands aplats. De ces formes colorées émergent, dans un chaos savamment maîtrisé, des éléments iconographiques et des inscriptions, plus ou moins identi- fiables, souvent anodins. Cette irruption d’éléments quotidiens semble prendre la forme de rébus qui composent autant d’univers à décoder qu’il y a de spectateurs pour s’en approprier les significations. Des fragments de corps en tension, des objets extraits du quotidien, potentiellement retournables, des symboles d’autorité et du consumérisme, deviennent autant d’armes, qui, combinées, semblent pouvoir dénoncer, attaquer ou défendre.
Avec ces éléments et ces symboles, rassemblés sous la forme de métaphores et de signaux subcon- scients, l’artiste cherche à décrire certaines tensions symptomatiques des sociétés contemporaines où l’autorité, combinée au pouvoir, se compromettent pour imposer dans les faits, un état d’urgence, dans lequel l’individu vit dans une soumission permanente.
Dans le cadre de cette exposition, une monographie de l’artiste sera produite par KLF réunissant les perspectives critiques de Lina Lazaar, Matthieu Lelièvre, l’écrivaine et historienne tunisienne Olfa Youssef, la sociologue Deena Weinstein et du critique d’art Olivier Rachet .
En outre, une programmation très riche avec ces contributeurs de renom est prévue durant l’exposi- tion.
La Station d’art B7l9
Le B7L9 est le premier centre d’art contemporain à but non lucratif qui a ouvert en 2018, cette station d’art est implantée à Tunis en banlieue dans une zone rurale qui propose un programme annuel complet d’événements artistiques et culturels accessibles gratuitement à tous. Premier lieu permanent de la Fondation Kamel Lazaar, le B7L9 est un outil qui favorise la mise en place des mis- sions et des actions de la Fondation :
Offrir aux artistes un lieu pour expérimenter, développer et exposer leur pratique, ou effectuer des recherches.
Offrir à la communauté artistique et scientifique un lieu d’échanges, de partages,de rencontres, de débats pour explorer de nouvelles idées et concepts.
Démocratiser l’art contemporain et l’offre culturelle en général en encourageant les artistes invités à interagir avec les communautés locales par le biais d’ateliers, de séminaires, d’événements ou de programmes de sensibilisation.
Thameur Mejri
Né en 1982 à Tunis, diplômé de l’Institut des Beaux-Arts de Tunis, Thameur Mejri vit et travaille à Nabeul. Ses récentes expositions solos comprennent Espaces hérétiques (2017) à la Galerie Elmarsa, Dubaï, UAE, Terrains érodés (2019) à la Galerie 1957, Accra, Ghana et Walking Targets (2020) à la Gal- erie Selma Feriani, Tunis, qui le représente actuellement.
Il a aussi pris part à plusieurs expositions collectives, dont, la 13ème biennale du Caire (2019) et Catch a fire (2020) au Montague Contemporary, NYC, USA. L’année 2022, sera marquée par une importante exposition personnelle au Musée d’Art Contemporain de Lyon.
Thameur Mejri explore les complexités de l’existence humaine en identifiant des parallèles entre les idées paradoxales de violence, d’innocence, de culpabilité et de honte. Ses toiles sont une déconstruc- tion en chair et en os, exprimant ce qu’il appelle un « exorcisme séculaire ». Cette déconstruction active vise à mettre en évidence la violente hiérarchie du signifié sur le signifiant, à donner un sens à la façon dont nous, les humains, sommes conditionnés par les dogmes, les circonstances et l’élite du pouvoir.
Matthieu Lelièvre
Diplômé en histoire de l’art et en muséologie de l’Ecole du Louvre et de l’Institut National du Patri- moine, il a travaillé pour différents musées, fondations d’entreprises et galeries d’art. En tant qu’expert en art contemporain, il a co-fondé ou collaboré avec plusieurs associations, galeries et musées à Berlin (Kunst Büro Berlin, Mars, Hamish Morrison Galerie, Berlinische Galerie…) avant de devenir à Paris responsable du cabinet des arts graphiques du Musée des Arts Décoratifs.
Outre sa pratique curatoriale se concentrant notamment sur la scène émergente et pour laquelle son expertise l’a amené à rejoindre de nombreux jurys et commissions, il a ensuite été en charge de la jeune création et des arts graphiques en tant que commissaire associé à la Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac à Paris, Pantin et Salzbourg.
Depuis 2018, il collabore avec le Musée d’Art Contemporain de Lyon en tant que Conseiller Artistique en charge de la jeune création et des relations internationales tout en poursuivant une activité de commissaire indépendant et d’auteur.
La Fondation Kamel Lazaar
Depuis sa création en 2005, la Fondation Kamel Lazaar pour l’art et la culture a lancé plusieurs actions et projets dont les effets locaux et régionaux mettent en avant la vitalité et la diversité de la scène culturelle de la région MENA. Il s’agit de réfléchir et mettre en œuvre un discours régional post- colonial, pour réécrire une histoire de l’art qui redonne sa place aux différentes localités, pour créer des ponts et des parallèles entre les différentes écoles et mouvements artistiques qui ne soient plus exclu- sivement articulés autour de l’histoire de l’art occidental.
Pour cela, KLF soutient la production et l’accompagnement des artistes, des initiatives de recherche, de publication et d’exposition et développe des partenariats et des échanges avec des acteurs culturels internationaux pour promouvoir la Tunisie comme plaque tournante de l’art contemporain.

Solo Exhibition
From 25 March to 2 May 2021
At B7L9 art station by the Kamel Lazaar Foundation
Following the group exhibition Seen and Unseen, intertwining memory and poetry, B7L9 Art Station is pleased to present the first institutional solo exhibition in Tunisia of the Tunisian painter Thameur Mejri, entitled States of Exception and curated by Matthieu Lelièvre.
A vernissage is planned for March 25 at 5pm, followed by a talk with Thameur Mejri and Matthieu Lelièvre at 6.30pm.
For this solo exhibition, Thameur Mejri chose to explore fundamental notions of power in a demo- cratic context. The title of the exhibition is drawn from the philosopher Giorgio Agamben, whose work of the same name reflects on the nature and use of power in a democratic context and ques- tions the legitimacy of the state’s use of power in extraordinary circumstances beyond the law.
Through painting across a range of media, drawing, installation and a reflection on the studio itself, Thameur Mejri creates a composite and polymorphic space of expression and action in which the bodies of visitors can engage visually, physically, and mentally. Together they deconstruct the nature of violence and resistance within and outside the law. His artworks are based on the pictorial tradi- tion of emotional expression, using colour applied on large flat surfaces. From these coloured forms emerge iconographic elements and inscriptions in a skilfully controlled chaos. Fragments of bodies in tension, objects taken from everyday life, and symbols of authority and consumerism become weapons which, combined, seem able to denounce, attack or defend.
With these elements and symbols, gathered in metaphors and subconscious signs, the artist seeks to describe certain tensions that are symptomatic of contemporary societies where authority, com- bined with power, impose a state of emergency in which the individual lives in permanent submis- sion.
As part of this exhibition, a monograph of the artist will be produced by KLF, bringing together the critical perspectives of Lina Lazaar, Matthieu Lelièvre, the Tunisian writer and historian Olfa Youssef, the sociologist Deena Weinstein and the art criticist Olivier Rachet.
In addition, a rich programme with these contributors is planned during the exhibition.
B7L9 Art Station
The B7L9 is the first art station in Tunis located in a rural suburb that offers a full annual program of artistic and cultural events.
As the first permanent location of the Kamel Lazaar Foundation, the B7L9 is a tool to promote the implementation of the Foundation’s missions and actions:
Provide a place for artists to experiment, develop and exhibit their practice and conduct research.
Offer the artistic and scholarly community a place for exchange, sharing, meeting and debate to explore new ideas and concepts.
Democratize contemporary art and cultural offer in general by encouraging guest artists to interact with local communities through workshops, seminars, events or outreach programs.
Thameur Mejri
Born in 1982 in Tunis, graduated from the Fine Arts Institute of Tunis, Thameur Mejri lives and works in Nabeul. His recent solo exhibitions include Heretical Spaces (2017) at Elmarsa Gallery, Dubai, UAE, Eroded Land (2019) at Gallery 1957, Accra, Ghana and Walking Targets (2020) at Selma Feriani Gallery, Tunis, which currently represents the artist. He also exhibited in several collective exhibi- tions, including the 13th Cairo Biennial (2019) and Catch a Fire (2020) at Montague Contemporary, NYC, USA.
In addition, a major solo exhibition at the Contemporary Art Museum in Lyon will take place in 2022. Thameur Mejri explores the complexities of human existence by identifying parallels between the paradoxical ideas of violence, innocence, guilt and shame. His paintings are a deconstruction in the flesh, expressing what he calls a “secular exorcism”. This active deconstruction aims to highlight the violent hierarchy of the signified over the signifier, to make sense of the way we humans are condi- tioned by dogma, circumstance, and power.
Matthieu Lelièvre
Matthieu Lelièvre is an art historian, independent curator for contemporary art, and curatorial advi- sor at Contemporary Art Museum in Lyon (macLYON).
Graduate in art history and museology from the Ecole du Louvre and the Institut National du Patri- moine, he has previously been simultaneously curator and head of collections for museums, galleries and foundations. As an expert in contemporary art, he has co-founded or collaborated with several associations, private galleries and museums in Berlin. In Paris, Mr. Lelièvre was in charge of the Drawing Cabinet of the Musée des Arts Décoratifs. Besides his independent curatorial practice focusing on emerging artists for which his expertise led him to join several boards and juries, he took care for several years of the young artists and graphic department as an associate curator at the Gal- erie Thaddaeus Ropac.
Since 2018, Matthieu Lelievre has collaborated with the Museum of Contemporary Art in Lyon as its Artistic Advisor in order to curate a program dedicated to international emerging artists and its inter- national relations whilst continuing to work as an independent curator and author.
Kamel Lazaar Foundation
Since its founding in 2005, the Kamel Lazaar Foundation for Art and Culture has launched several actions and projects whose local and regional impact highlight the vitality and diversity of the cultur- al scene in the MENA region. KLF’s aim is to reflect and implement a postcolonial regional discourse, to rewrite an art history that gives back its place to the different localities, and create bridges and parallels between the different schools and artistic movements that are no longer exclusively articu- lated around the history of occidental art.
The KLF supports the production and accompaniment of artists, research, publication and exhibi- tion initiatives and develops partnerships and exchanges with international cultural actors, in order to promote Tunisia as a hub for contemporary art.
